Who Reads Tweets?
I was recently contacted by a Snohomish County real estate agent who wanted to know more about the elloAgency consulting services. As I began to explain to him what we do, I mentioned Twitter as an effective method to develop new connections and at that point he stopped me.
He told me that he had tweeted over a thousand times in less than a year, was following over 2,000 and had over 1,000 followers and to date could not verify one bit on new business from his efforts. In fact, he said he is no longer even reading the tweets he receives or sends tweets as it has become a big time waster.
After conducting an elloAgency New Business Development Review of his Twitter Account, I pointed out to him, among other things, that over 80% of his followers were out of his service area and nearly all of the accounts he was following were either not related to the real estate industry or out of his service area, as well.
In other words, his marketing tweets were falling on deaf ears because the people he was tweeting to could not possible be interested in what he had to say or offer. Fact is, according to many sources, over 99% of the Tweets posted are never read by human eyes.
But the tweets were not the primary cause with his failed Twitter approach. Twitter is great for making relationship connects and if you follow up with those connections, that is where the new business development opportunity lies, not in tweets, in connections.
So, it is not your tweets that bring in a lead, it is WHO you follow and WHO is following you and how you process these connections. Only follow those that could be a client and only except those followers that could be future business. Always thank those that follow and request additional connections on other relationship and/or social sites.
